How to Fix a Noisy Garage Door

Noise and squeaking produced by a garage door is caused by one, or a combination, of a few issues. Curing a noisy garage door could be as easy as lubricating all of the moving parts associated with the door, or as difficult as completely replacing either the door itself, the garage door opener, or both. Always begin by adding fresh lubricant (WD-40)to the garage door. Depending what type of garage door opener you have depends on what you lubricate it with. Chain drive units can use WD-40 and screw drives use (Lubriplate) low temp white grease. This can be found at Home Depot or Lowe,s stores. If the squeaking and noise persists, take the necessary action to replace damaged or worn parts such as hinges or rollers.

Visit your local Home Depot or Lowe's and look for the garage door hardware and related garage door items that you my need to replace. Look for a product called WD-40, and if your garage door opener is a screw drive opener, pick up a tube of screw drive lubricant called Lubriplate.


Apply the lubricants as directed on their respective packages.

In order to achieve complete coverage on all moving parts, the garage door will have to be opened and closed several times. Remember to coat the door rollers and the door hinges. Do not spray the door tracks. The rollers are made to turn in the tracks not slide. By spraying the tracks you will collect dust and dirt in the track and that will act like sandpaper over time in the bearings of the rollers and wear them out prematurely.

Be sure to clean up all lubricant over spray and/or dripping with a cloth or paper towel and discard. It is very easy to slip on a lubricated floor.

Open and close the garage door one final time to ensure all squeaks and other noises have been remedied.
